Check out Paul Simon's "The Obvious Child" to get a feel for it. The percussion on that track was performed by Grupo Cultural Olodum and was recorded on the streets of Salvador, Bahia.
Instrumentation
Repenique
The main groove is 16th notes with the accent on the 3rd note of every group of four. (one e AND a), but there is a lot more going on for this lead instrument.
Caixa
The groove is 16th notes with the accent on the 3rd note of every group of four. (one e AND a)
Timbal
The basic groove has five notes: ONE (e and) A TWO (e) AND A. The sequence is Right Slap, Left Open, Right Slap, Right Bass, Left Bass.
There is lots of room for improvisation, but DO NOT step on the Repenique melodies. Sometimes it plays the response to the Repenique. In the callout played for the ending, the Timbal plays in unison with the Repenique.
AgogĂ´
There are nine notes in this pattern: H - H -, L - L -, H H - L, - L L -.
ONE[high] ------------- AND[high] ----------
TWO[low] ------------- AND[low] -----------
THREE[high] E[high] ---------------- A[low]
----------------- E[low] AND[low] -------------
Chant: "I - LIKE - french - horns -. KIKI - loves - guitar -." ("I LIKE" and "KIKI" are on the high bell. The other notes are low.)
Surdos
The Primero (low Surdo) is on the ONE and THREE.
The Segundo (high Surdo) is on the TWO and FOUR.
The Corchi (middle Surdo) plays (one and) TWO AND (three and) FOUR E AND A. There is some improvisation, like playing THREE E AND A FOUR E AND A. In fact, at the end of the break, the Corchi plays exactly THREE E AND A FOUR E AND A with the ensemble restarting the groove on the following ONE.
