ROGUE SAMBA

Mozambique

Complex Rhythm with a Rumba Clave

This piece is in 2/2 and is based on a rumba clave, played by the flat bell. Add the Agogô, and the rhythm comes together. The next most important instruments are the low and medium surdos, neither of which lands on the One. The basic groove is rounded out by the caixa, which is the only instrument, other than the flat bell, that plays the One.

Optional instruments include a 3rd, high surdo (which can be played with polyurethane sticks), repenique, and timbal. The timbal part is especially melodic. None of these parts lands on the One.

The piece starts with the flat bell, which is joined by the Agogô. Add the high surdo, then the medium surdo, caixa and other instruments. The ending is signaled by the flat bell player, who plays the clave loudly. The entire ensemble plays the clave too, and then the piece stops.

Note that all of the instruments, except the clave, enter on the final "Two And" of their groove.
