Rogue Samba Original
This piece is built around a conversation between Repenique and Timbal. The Caixa gets an eight note solo, then the ensemble plays the punchline: "Baby Woke Up!" The baby's heartbeat is created by three Surdos and Agogô.
The piece starts with a Whistle, Caixa, the ensemble, and then the groove builds. First is Surdos and Agogo, then Caixa, and then the Repenique/Timbal conversation. The piece allows improvisation as the Repenique and Timbal can just groove, improvise, or trade fours. But when the melody comes in, it should be played straight, so the ensemble can stop and start their parts.
The main groove is built on the heartbeat. The Surdos and Agogos start, the Caixa comes in, then the Repenique leads the Timbal.
The Repenique/Timbal conversation has the following (silent) lyrics...
Repenique: "I can go to the party, after the baby goes to sleep."
Timbal: "When the baby goes to sleep."
Repenique: "I can go to the party, after the baby goes to sleep."
Timbal: "When the baby goes to sleep."
Repenique: "When the baby goes to sleep?"
Timbal: "When the baby goes to sleep."
Repenique: "When the baby goes to sleep?"
Timbal: "When the baby goes to sleep."
Repenique: "I can go to the party, after the baby goes to sleep."
(Caixa plays eight notes of suspense...)
All: "Baby woke up!
The Break is based on the "Patty Cake" melody, and it's indicated with three whistle notes. The ensemble finishes the first line with one hit, the second with two, and the third with three. The Caixa has its solo, Baby Woke Up!, and the heartbeat starts again.
The ending is signaled with a long whistle and a fist. The piece ends with the ensemble playing, "Baby Woke Up!"
