The Timbal ("chim - BAUW") is a tall, conical instrument, played with the bare hands. It's typically fixed in place, though there are shorter instruments that can be used when marching. The main three notes are Open, Slap, and Bass, and there can also be ghost notes, played softly with hand, finger, or thumb. Some grooves are played strictly, but there is also room to improvise, so long as it takes a back seat to the Repenique. Since the Timbal can improvise and doesn't need to lead, this player has a bit of freedom, but should always stay grounded in order to support the music and the ensemble.
