The Tamborim often plays synchopated rhythms that dance between the main pulses. It can also play the Carreteiro ("kah - hay - TAY -roo", or "Truck Driver") rhythm, which plays every subdivision, and includes a flip of the instrument. It can also play the Subido ("rise"), which is a triplet crescendo, played while raising the instrument into the air. Since the instrument is small and light, Tamborim players are free to dance a bit while playing.
